SABAH ENERGY CORPORATION SDN. BHD. SECURES ITS FIRST TWO NATURAL GAS CUSTOMERS IN MAINLAND SABAH

Sabah Energy Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (SEC) is the licensee for the distribution of natural gas for Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan. SEC’s natural gas distribution license was granted by the Energy Commission of Malaysia.  SEC has been supplying natural gas to various factories in the Labuan since 1985 and is currently expanding its natural gas distribution system both in Labuan and Sabah.

SEC has now secured its first two customers in Mainland Sabah by signing two long-term natural gas supply agreements with Unimekar Metals Sdn. Bhd. and Unimekar Steel Sdn. Bhd. on 25th September 2002. Under the said agreements, SEC is to supply natural gas to Unimekar Metals, a galvanising factory, and Unimekar Steel, a foundry plant, as an alternative fuel to replace the existing diesel and LPG for their operations at Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), Sabah.

Natural gas can be used by the industrial, commercial and residential sectors for various purposes.

SEC’s natural gas, amongst other advantages, is a competitive, cleaner, safe, more efficient and environmentally-friendly fuel as compared with other types of fuels. The said natural gas is to be supplied to Unimekar Metals and Unimekar Steel via a modern natural gas pipeline system with in-built automatic over-pressurisation protection system, telemetry system and other modern control devices.  The design and operation of the pipeline system are based on the highest Malaysian and International Standards and code of practice.  In addition, the natural gas is odourised to give an added-distinctive safety feature to the gas supply operation. SEC's natural gas business process is accredited with MS ISO 9001:2000.

Natural gas users are able to achieve cost savings in terms of fuel, storage, handling, etc.. Natural gas users would benefit from greater operational efficiency. In addition, the utilisation of natural gas in place of other types of fuel would contribute to a cleaner environment in which we live.

With its initial natural gas distribution system already in place in the export-oriented zone of KKIP, SEC would distribute natural gas to other industries located in KKIP and its vicinity. In the medium-term, SEC may expand its natural gas distribution to Telipok, Sepangar Bay, Inanam and downtown, Kota Kinabalu subject to economic feasibility. In the long-term, SEC intends to distribute natural gas to other major towns in Sabah subject to gas availability and economic feasibility. The availability of natural gas as a fuel would provide further impetus to accelerate the economic development in Sabah towards achieving the Nation’s Vision 2020.

SEC SECURES ANOTHER NATURAL GAS CUSTOMER IN LABUAN

SEC's existing customers in Labuan are Guocera Tile Industries (Labuan) Sdn. Bhd. and Sabah Flour and Feedmills Sdn. Bhd.

SEC has now secured another customer in the Labuan. A Natural Gas Supply Agreement was recently signed with Perbadanan Labuan (PL) on 1st Nov 2002. Under the said agreement, SEC is to supply natural gas as a fuel to PL to operate its Thermal Oxidation Plant (TOP) in the Ranca-Ranca Industrial Estate in Labuan to incinerate garbage and rubbish collected on the island.
