Natural Gas

Natural gas plays a critical role in the energy transition as it is a cleaner fossil fuel and act as energy security during the transition towards a more sustainable energy.

SEC as the leading energy provider of Sabah is committed towards energizing progress anchored on security, diversification and sustainability.

SEC currently supplies 362 MMscfd of natural gas, powering up to 500,000 households through our power generation portfolio, serving over 45 customers, and supporting approximately 8,000 jobs across the energy value chain. Additionally, SEC fuels 86% of Sabah’s power demand through its natural gas supply.

Adoption of Technology

To enhance energy efficiency and drive productivity, we have embraced digitalisation and advanced technologies. Our utilisation of the SCADA monitoring system enables real-time tracking of gas operational status, ensuring swift and effective management.

How We Deliver Our Natural Gas

We deliver our natural gas supply in three ways:

1. Conventional Underground Pipeline

SEC’s natural gas infrastructure is designed to deliver natural gas with maximum safety, reliability and efficiency. It is available for the potential and existing natural gas users at Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), Kota Kinabalu , Sabah and Ranca-Ranca Industrial Park, Labuan.

2. Virtual Pipeline System (VPS)

WHAT IS CNG VIA VPS?

The system features a fully modular design that facilitates quick, easy, and cost-effective construction and expansion. It operates on a mother-daughter station concept, with the mother station located at Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) and daughter stations situated at customers’ premises. At the customer site, compressed natural gas (CNG) is regulated and de-pressurised to meet final usage requirements. The continuity of gas supply is ensured through timely replenishment of fully charged Mobile Accumulation Trailers (MATs) and the removal of depleted ones. This process is efficiently managed using online SCADA monitoring, ensuring seamless operations.

3. Liquefied Natural Gas

LNG VIA VPS?

Natural gas, when cooled to -162°C under atmospheric pressure, becomes a clear, colourless, and odourless liquid known as liquefied natural gas (LNG). The liquefaction process reduces its volume by over 600 times, making it significantly more cost-effective to store and transport. Composed mainly of methane with small amounts of other hydrocarbons, LNG weighs half as much as water and is stored and transported in cryogenic tanks to maintain its -162°C environment. To ensure precise control and efficient management of the process, a SCADA online monitoring system is utilised.
