Energy and Nature Forum

14 Jun 2025 | News & Event

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 June — Datuk Adzmir Abd Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC), took the stage at the Energy and Nature Forum, a plenary session of Energy Asia 2025, to share Sabah’s integrated approach to energy development and environmental preservation.

In his presentation titled “Energising Progress, Harmonising Nature: Sabah Energy’s Perspective,” Datuk Adzmir highlighted Sabah’s unique position as a state rich in both energy resources and ecological heritage. Home to some of the world’s oldest rainforests and richest biodiversity, Sabah offers an opportunity to align energy growth with nature conservation rather than see them in opposition.

He underscored SEC’s role as Sabah’s largest natural gas supplier, currently meeting 86% of the state’s electricity needs. “Natural gas serves as a cleaner transitional fuel as we shift away from diesel and coal,” he noted, adding that SEC is channelling revenues from gas operations into the development of solar, hydro, and wind energy, part of its long-term goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Beyond clean energy, Datuk Adzmir also addressed SEC’s environmental and social priorities. He spoke of the Corporation’s wildlife conservation efforts and its partnerships with local stakeholders to ensure that the energy transition is both just and inclusive.

Joining Datuk Adzmir on the panel were Libby Sandbrook, Director of Fauna & Flora, and Mohamad Irwan Aman, General Manager of Sustainability at Sarawak Energy Berhad. The session was moderated by Wan Sayuti B. Wan Hussin, Senior General Manager of Strategy, Policy & Regulation, Corporate Sustainability at PETRONAS.

The forum served as a timely platform for SEC to reinforce its commitment to balancing energy security with environmental stewardship, while building regional collaboration towards a low-carbon future for Sabah and beyond.
